Steve Smith: Photographer/Lecturer in Photography
Bn. 1972
My early professional photographic career was centered around the fashion industry, working for fashion houses and magazines including Dazed and Confused and i-D Magazine and also included celebrity portraiture for Instyle Magazine, The Telegraph and The Times.
In 2007 I returned home to Aberdeen to embark on my current role as a lecturer in photography. This move allowed a return to earlier photographic pursuits, far removed from the commercial constraints of a client’s brief.
My work concentrates on recording the formal and informal arrangements of things, often the banal; with a mixture of witticism and critique. My most recent work has documented areas of social concern with an inquisitive pursuit of neutrality and impartiality that is impossible to achieve but fuels my deeper understanding of the subject.
Steve Smith lectures full-time at North East Scotland College. He is currently self represented and takes commissions on a select basis.
